When my kids were born, everyone told me not to blink or I’d miss something. They were right and the time has come to send another to college. As I pack up my second child for college, there is a long list of things to get done before we drop him off.
Some are simple like counting his underwear so he can limit how much laundry he does and others are more complicated like making sure he is covered by insurance while he is away.
The first coverage that needs to be checked is the medical coverage. Although his is covered as he is still a dependent, it is important to find out what is covered as he is in a different area. We needed to check what is in network and what services he is allowed. For us, it worked best to buy a supplemental plan to make sure that the little things are covered. The price was reasonable and we also have peace of mind knowing he can get whatever he needs.
The other insurance that I am insisting we get is renter’s insurance. We purchase it through our homeowners’ policy and, for us, it will cover theft and damage in the dorm room. Of course we will tell him to make sure he locks his door and takes care of things, but you never know.
As with all of the insurance I own, I am hopeful that I won’t have to use any of it, but it’s still there in the event we need it.
